How to Know What Size Base is Needed

Measure the circumference of the bottom of the shaft before it engages the base. To size the base, the best way is to tape a piece of string to one side of the shaft, go all the way around the circle. The length of the string is the circumference of the bottom of the shaft. The formula is the length x 3.14 which equals the diameter. The hole should be 1/4" larger than the shaft diameter. Select from the standard models below or order custom sized.

Tuscan Bases are used with the classical Order of Tuscan created by the Etruscans (6th Century BC). They have one rounded profile (Torus) that sits on a square (Plinth) Imperial Productions® offers them Load Bearing made from exterior hardwood staves glued together as done for the past 200 years. Select from exterior woods White Pine, White Oak, Western Red Cedar. The maximum diameter of the Torus is 36" (91.44cm) with any size of Plinth. Order 1 or 2 parts to any custom size and even parts of the column shaft that may be rotted.

Decorative Tuscan Bases are hollow and do not hold load. They envelop a load bearing plug or the column shaft that supports the column's weight. All are made from molds available split or whole. They are made from ArchPolymerTM which is rot water and insect resistant for interior & exterior use, GRG-NeoPlasterTM for interior use and GFRC-ZeamentTM a Portland Cement composite for commercial or high traffic areas.

SPLIT BASES FOR COLUMN WRAPS

All of our bases can be ordered split for column wrap. ArchPolymerTM bases can be split down the middle or on the diagonal. You will loose the thickness of the blade once cut. Always use the approved adhesive and poly spackling compound to cover the seam. For GFRC-ZeamentTM we recommend ordering them precut, however if you cut them yourself we suggest a diamond blade.

Issue: The bases of the columns are rotted and need to be replaced

Solution: an Economical Approach for non National Trust Buildings

The traditional base is solid wood and holds the load of the column shaft. For historic buildings we can create exact reproductions. For average homes where there are economic constraints, you can order a white oak a load bearing plug to hold the shaft weight and cover it with one of our composite bases split to encapsulate the load bearing plug. The hole size of the decorative base should be slightly larger than your load bearing plug accounting for the thickness of the blade if you have to cut the base in half to wrap the plug.

Load Bearing Columns

Fiberglass is a combination of polyester resins and glass fibers with a Gelcoat covering. They are made from molds and approximately 2-3lbs per square foot. Fiberglass is weather resistant and is suitable for emersion in water for fountains. The tensile strength is superior for earthquakes and hurricane zones however they do requires to be affixed to the substrate with hardware supplied by others. Fiberglass columns meet ASTM-E84 fire rating standards when specified as an upgrade. They are molded in 2 pieces and seamlessly put together when ordered whole. Specify in halves for post wrap or pilaster applications or wedged for corners.

Use Bondo to cover seams. Expensive new molds are required for customization however they can be cut to height by the factory or others.

ArchPolymerTM is a synthetic wood with the same consistency as white pine. It is not a plastic. It is rot, water and insect resistant, cuts like wood and comes white primed. To replace rotted or broken bases, GFRC-ZeamentTM is the perfect solution! It is a composite of Portland cement and polymers producing a smooth exterior finish. It is strong, heavy and load bearing. The Torus and Plinth are hollow, however the Plinth is wide enough to carry column loads. Custom sizes are available from 6" to 48" diameter. Large bases are made in 2 parts Torus and Plinth or split for reassembly around an existing column shaft.
