Classical Definations - Ionic Order  Scamozzi Style

 Ionic Capital with 4 Scrolls

 Ionic Order Design Page

Scamozzi is classical style based on the Ionic Order.  It is an Ionic Capital with 4 scrolls (ie Volutes - a design mimicking a spiral Ram's horn). The style was created by architect Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548 to 1616) and named accordingly referenced in his treatise of 1615.  The design solves the problem of Ionic capitals on the corners of a building whereby the tubular Ionic volutes on the sides extend from the front to the back of the capital making it difficult to complete a corner. With 4 volutes, the capitals transcend from the front to the sides of the building with ease.  Columns with Scamozzi capitals employ Attic bases. We can create exact custom Historic Duplications of existing Capitals. The Scamozzi capitals are hollow with column shaft taking the load down from the lintel to the substrate.  Specify Whole or Split for Post Wrap or Pilaster applications. Non Wood composite capitals are made from molds which includes FRP-PolyCompTM, GRG-NeoPlasterTM, Fiberglass ArchPolymerTM and GFRC-ZeamentTM. These non-wood Scamozzi columns are available 5 Feet to 30 Feet up to 36" diameters. Custom Hardwood Scamozzi columns are made to a maximum of 36" diameter 3 to 24 Feet high in 24 hardwood species to any specified size with solid or hollow cores.  For load bearing applications we offer White Oak Load Plugs that fit into the hollow center of the capital or base.  Finish your Capitals with Specialty Paints and Real Metal Coating

They have 4 scrolls (ie Volutes - a design mimicking a spiral Ram's horn). BASES

 Attic bases for Decorative columns

Attic Bases

Attic Bases are utilized on all classical orders of columns and can be ordered separately. Specify split for post wrap, split to engage a half column or wedged for corner placement.

For economical solutions:  Attic Bases made from ArchPolymerTM, a synthetic wood are lite weight, hollow, and decorative thus they do not hold load as they wrap the bottom of the column shaft.

Hardwood Attic Bases are solid and hold load. We recommend White Oak for exterior durability and hardness. Historic Reproductions are welcome for specific sizes. Made up to 36" diameter.

The superior material is GFRC-ZeamentTM is a Portland Cement with a very smooth finish. The Torus portion is hollow to wrap around a column shaft, and the Plinth Frame is strong to hold the load of the shaft.

Load Plugs for Hollow Caps & Bases

To transform hollow decorative ArchPolymerTM Attic Bases to carry load, we manufacture load plugs that are placed inside a hollow base or capital. Specify the exact size to be fabricated from White Oak up to 36" diameters or GFRC-ZeamentTM Both GFRC-Zeament and Hardwood Attic bases hold load and do not require plugs

 Fiberglass

Load Bearing Columns

Fiberglass is a combination of polyester resins and glass fibers with a Gelcoat covering. They are made from molds and approximately 2-3lbs per square foot.  Fiberglass is weather resistant and is suitable for emersion in water for fountains. The tensile strength is superior for earthquakes and hurricane zones however they do requires to be affixed to the substrate with hardware supplied by others.  Fiberglass columns meet ASTM-E84 fire rating standards when specified as an upgrade.  They are molded in 2 pieces and seamlessly put together when ordered whole. Specify in halves for post wrap or pilaster applications or wedged for corners.

Use Bondo to cover seams. Expensive new molds are required for customization however they can be cut to height by the factory or others.
